MEET THE BUS

(She insisted on an introduction)

Meet our bus: RML2585, a 1966 AEC Routemaster, one of the most iconic and beloved vehicles ever built for London’s public transport system. Introduced in the 1950s, Routemasters were designed to be light, reliable, and easy to maintain—featuring innovations well ahead of their time, including independent front suspension and power steering. For decades, these double-decker workhorses became a defining part of London’s identity, instantly recognisable by their distinctive design and red livery. Routemasters operated on the city’s busiest routes and were trusted daily by millions of Londoners—from daily commuters and schoolchildren to late-night theatregoers and tourists discovering the capital for the first time.

This particular vehicle—built in 1966—faithfully served the streets of London until 2004, completing thousands of journeys through some of the city’s most historic boroughs. After its retirement from Transport for London service, it was purchased by an American tour company that saw potential for a new kind of adventure. The bus was carefully restored and reimagined for sightseeing: the roof of the upper deck was removed to create an open-air experience, and it was shipped across the Atlantic to begin its next chapter on the roads of the United States.

Today, it lives on as part of Maryland Double Deckers, a rolling piece of history that’s still delighting passengers, just with a bit more sun. The bus comfortably seats 32 on the open upper deck, and 24 on the enclosed lower deck, making it perfect for private events, sightseeing tours, and special occasions of all kinds.

Whether you’re enjoying the breeze from the top or soaking in the vintage charm below, you’re riding in a true original—part of both London’s legacy and Maryland’s modern-day magic.
